Protecting the Environment with Diesel Containment

Today, there is a growing urgency to preserve and protect our environment. Governments around the world have implemented strict regulations to mitigate ecological harm, with standards such as UL 1854 LLC / ULC S668 enforcing rigorous manufacturing and testing for oil and gas containment. Traditional methods continue to face challenges, especially regarding water accumulation and the subsequent increase in maintenance and labour costs.

Since 2008, Canadian regulations have increasingly targeted the risk of tank leaks from ageing storage systems. With many systems exceeding 20 years in service, the risk of corrosion and failure has grown. As these tanks are replaced or upgraded, the Diesel Mat Secondary Containment System offers a viable, cost-effective alternative that meets modern environmental and operational standards.

Albarrie was approached by a customer in the remote Yukon territory to solve a secondary fuel containment challenge. The objective was to design and install a secondary containment system for two 100,000 L (26 417 gal) diesel storage tanks at an isolated power generation site near the Arctic Circle. Given the large volume of diesel and the location’s environmental sensitivity and remoteness, a reliable and cost-effective secondary containment solution was essential to safeguard the local community and surrounding environment.
